Day 1 Report

The annual Eldon Leisure Squash Club Championship got underway on Friday night, with some entertaining squash guaranteed as the majority of the first round match were due to be played.

The top 2 seeds, 3-time reigning champion Rich Hodges and last year's beaten finalist Milo McKenzie, had the night off to scout out their opponents, as they both had a bye in the first round. 5 of the 6 1st round matches were played on Friday night and all but one went the way of the seeds.

Mark Manuel (5/8 seed) was happy to come through a tough encounter against Andrew Webber, describing him as "a potential banana skin".

Guy Eniona (3/4 seed) also had a difficult 1st round match against Tom Hodgson, but he came through 3 tight games to win 3-0.

Sophie Cassidy and Mark Steven also won 3-0 taking out tournament organiser, Adam Coates, and Glover Gamero respectively.

The only upset of the A event 1st round came courtesy of Dave Oxley, who beat 5/8 seed Henry Darragh 3-0 to advance into day 2, where he would face Milo.

5 of the B event 1st round matches were played on the Friday night and all matches, except 1, went 3-0 in favour of the seeded players, including controlled displays from no.1 seed Umer Chughtai and 3/4 seed Istvan Soos.

The match between Dave Laws (5/8 seed) and Alwin Gieselmann was far closer, with the game going back and forth between the 2 evenly matched players, but Alwin managed to battle his way to a 3-2 victory and his prize was a 2nd round match against no.1 seed Umer.
