2016 REPORT

DAY 2

All quarters and semis to be played on Day 2, along with the start of the much-anticipated doubles and the ladies event.

A Event

No upsets in the A quarter-finals, with all of the seeds progressing. A thrilling 3-2 between Mark Manuel and Fran Luquin saw 3/4 seed Mark squeeze through to the semis and Pete was unable to repeat his 1st round heroics, losing 3-0 to Mark Steven. Rich progressed to the semi-finals after a well-contested and physical 3-0 battle with Guy Eniona. After winning his 1st round match 3-1, Milo beat Conor Lawless 3-0 to put him one win away from his 1st A final.

The first A semi-final saw Mark Manuel take on Rich Hodges; games 1 and 2 were quite straightforward for Rich but not one to give up, Mark went all out in the third game and was unlucky to lose out 17-15. Semi-final number 2 was Milo vs Mark Steven. Milo took the game to Mark and was more aggressive and attacking and won the encounter 3-0. Setting up a Rich vs Milo final!

In the A plate, Henry Darragh saw off Jack Smailes 3-0 and Glover Gamero came through an intense 3-2 with Andrew Webber. The family affair between Adam and Alan Coates saw experience overcome youth, with Alan winning 3-1 (no family bust-ups though!) The final plate 1st round was a tough match in which Richard Adamson beat Asmat Ullah Bajwa 3-2.

The plate semis saw Alan beat Richard 3-0 and Henry won 3-0 against Glover, setting up an all-Walker A plate final!

B Event

1 and 2 seeds, Istvan and Seth, progressed to the semi-final with relative ease. 3/4 seed Darren Salt had a big challenge against Chris Dunlavy, coming back from 10-5 down in the 1st game to win 12-10 and his momentum carried him to a 3-0 win to face Istvan in the 1st semi-final. Steve Drummond (3/4 seed) had a tough game against Umer Chughtai, who had just come back from injury, but Umer fought through to beat his Walker captain 3-2 and would face Seth in the 2nd semi-final.

The semi-final between Istvan and Darren was an exciting and unpredictable affair but Istvan used all of his experience and forced his way into another final, winning 3-2! The 2nd semi wasn't quite as close as, unfortunately, Umer had used all of his energy to win his quarter-final match and was struggling with his injury, Seth took advantage and won 3-0. So the 2 top seeds would battle it out for the B Event title!

In the B plate, Matt Duncombe and Kat Beeson had byes straight to the semi-final. Matt Waddington, determined to overcome his 1st round loss, had a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Imran Haq and Daniel MacDonald beat the tournament sponsor Nigel Miller (of Kidd & Spoor) 3-1.

Accuracy overcame power in the first semi-final, with Kat beating Daniel McDonald 3-1 and Matt Waddington continued his form from the previous round and powered through to the final after beating Matt Duncombe 3-0, setting up a Kat v Matt W plate final!

C Event

The first semi-final saw Abdullah Malik in another 3-2, this time however he came out on the wrong side, losing to Katy Stockwell. In the 2nd semi-final, Eldon Ladies teammates Shef Popat and Jennifer Hewitt battled it out, with Shef coming out as the victor 3-1. So there would be an all-ladies C event Final between Shef and Katy.

No C plate semi-finals due to players dropping out, so Henry Allen and Kevin Walls both advanced to the C Plate final! (Lucky for some!)

Ladies Event

The ladies event got underway with Kat Beeson taking on Katy Stockwell and Kat advanced to her second final after winning 3-1. Jennifer Hewitt had the joy of play Shef for the 2nd time of the day, but couldn't get revenge for her loss in the C event, losing another tight 3-1 encounter, setting up a Kat v Shef final on Sunday!

Doubles Event

The doubles event kicked off on Saturday afternoon with the round robin, in which all 6 teams played each other in a single game to 15. The 4 teams with the most points would advance to the elimination rounds on Sunday morning.

Milo and Guy took 1st place winning all of their games, giving them the maximum points available of 75. Hot on their heels in 2nd with 69 points were Steve Drummond and Henry Darragh, who despite losing 2 games took a high number of points in those losses.

In 3rd place with 64 points and 1 loss were Alan and Adam Coates, who made up after Alan beat Adam in the A plate. They lost out on 2nd due to a poor performance against Milo & Guy, only winning 4 points. Taking the last elimination spot were Andrew Webber and Pete Downs with 59 points.

Richard & Umer and Dan & Imran didn't manage to advance to the eliminations.

This set up the 2 playoffs: Milo & Guy vs Steve & Henry - winner into the final loser into the play-off

Alan & Adam vs Andrew and Pete - winner into the play-off
